The most exiting night ever
Dear diary, Today was rather extraordinary ! It all started when papa announced that we would be going to Mrs Bootle noses annual ball. Of corse this was an unexpected twist in events as usually me and my two younger brother are stuck at home and I feel rather left out as I miss all the shopping expeditions and new frocks. This time it was rather different. Coming back from the ball I felt very grown up, anyone would in our amazing carriage. It is a newish thing with red velvet curtains and a black horse. It rides along and everyone stares up at us as we sail past, king of the road. It wasn't quite the same though. It seemed to be in perpetual silence and I fount my self scuffing m...

Poor Turkey Girl
In early times there lived a girl who was so poor that she earned her bread as a turkey-herd. Every morning she left her tumble-down home to collect the flocks of families richer than her own. She would drive them out into the plains and watch all day as they foraged among the dry grass. Sometimes she was so lonely that she talked to the birds. “How I wish that I had a pretty dress,” she would say. “And nice food, and a ribbon for my hair.” But although she was shabby, she had a kind heart and always looked after the birds in her care. Because of this, the turkeys were obedient and always came when she called. One day the girl was driving her birds out of town when they passed...

A Poem For April
This is an extract from the much longer work "The Sensitive Plant" And Spring arose on the garden fair, Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth’s dark breast rose from the dreams of its wintry rest

Malamud
Malamud was a Persian. His long black hair was sleekly brushed, his deep copper eyes gleamed brightly, he was in the peak of condition. Elegant, disdainful, his authority was unquestioned, his privilege extended to all quarters of the house. Nothing was too good for Malamud. He dined on the finest foods, he did as he pleased and nothing was allowed to disturb him. Nothing that is except Timothy. Malamud lived with Mrs Jonah Sandford at her Kensington address; an honour which during the school holidays he was forced to share with Timothy, her son. It was generally considered odd that Mrs Sanford should have retained her husband’s name after he had passed away since his contributio...

Rainy Day
Under garish pink umbrella stood a sumptuous looking lady her red lips clashed with her orange designer dress and her flamingo pink beret. In her hand was a maroon handbag and in her handbag was a caramel coloured chihuahua. Looking around she was the only star in the night sky. On the other side of the road was a bedraggled idiot holding a newspaper above his head. The soft patting of the rain splashed on the impervious metal roofs of passing by cars. Loud music was coming from the open windows of cars. She looked around and found everyone staring and turned her nose at them. A giant shroud had covered the city, the streets were empty but just a hint of sunshine managed to shine throu...

Daffodils
I wandered lonely as a Cloud That floats on high o'er vales and Hills, hen all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden Daffodils; Beside the Lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:- A Poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed---and gazed---but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft when on my couch I lie In vacant...

A New Beginning
It was a harsh venture into the world. Something was wrong and from the safety of my mummy’s tummy I was plucked! Then with my eyes unable to bear the bright light I kept them tightly closed. They put needles in my feet which hurt and bruised but I knew they must know why and that my mother and the nurses were trying to help - I just could not understand this new world. I longed for her comfort, yet she too was in much pain, but my Dad and she comforted me. I had to wear eye pads and lie under a bright light which I learned later was to help me not become jaundiced - I do not know what that means. I was uncomfortable and confused. I longed to meet again my new brother who was so ...

Peterkins Mystery
After Peterkin had calmed down from tasting the coconut which took a while. We walked on the soft warm sand when suddenly there was a big CRASH! Peterkin had spotted immedatley that a big wave had brought some of the barrels in with it from the shipwreck. Then we heard a explosion we were so frightened that we ran back as fast a cheetah into the forest. When we were far away enough we started to look at our surroundings but all we could see was just trees then Jack said "guys we might have a problem, we are lost! lets build a shelter to stay the night". Peterkin got hyperactive and we were not going to let him IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BIG Jack shouted in less than an a hour they h...

The Heron's Tale
I am a male heron, a wading bird related to the bitterns family. You can find us worldwide, but mainly in tropical areas. I do not know how my ancestors got here and I often wish we were still in a nice warm country. As I am sure you must realise I am a lot smarter than the others as I was able to dictate this note to the human being now typing it out. I was lucky to find him but I heard some of his friends saying that he was a complete birdbrain so I got together with him! We are unusual in the bird world in that we fly with our necks retracted and, as I expect you have seen, most birds fly with their necks stretched out. Another of our odd characteristics is that some of our feathers...

A Poem For February
The birds are gone, The ground is white, The winds are wild, They chill and bite; The ground is thick with slush and sleet, And I barely feel my feet.

Pilgrimage
Hello I am Kit the Knight and I am a Christian. I'm going to the Canterbury Cathedral to pray. I've been in many battles and I've won every one. I am very strong, very brave and I'm extremely kind as well as moral. I wear shiny armour and a gigantic metal helmet with a ruby red feather on the top. I am very funny and I make everyone laugh. Everyone respects me because I help everyone. I've got a huge horse named Joey. I said to nobody "I wish I had someone to come with me". A couple of minutes later I saw Ted. Ted said to me "What are you doing Kit?" I explained that I was going on a pilgrimage and Ted said to me "Can I come? I've always wanted to go on a pilgrimage but I've never h...

Winter
Clouded with snow The cold winds blow, And shrill on leafless bough The robin with its burning breast Alone sings now. The rayless sun, Day’s journey done, Sheds its last ebbing light On fields in leagues of beauty spread Unearthly white. Thick draws the dark, And spark by spark, The frost-fires kindle, and soon Over that sea of frozen foam Floats the white moon.

Christmas Bells
I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Dino D-Day
One cold ,dark day a group of kids called triple trouble were in the house trying to think of something to do. "I know!" Shouted James ,"let's explore the woods!".Noah jumped up "yeah, that's a great idea!" Once they were in the woods they started hearing wierd noises "umm I think we should go back"whispered Ophelia "nooooo!" Shouted Noah angrily . "Wait a second" said James and he pointed at a glowing green sphere , big enough for a whale to fit through. "What is it?" Asked Ophelia "I think it's some sort of portal" said Noah. New Baby Brother
Once upon a time there was a white little horse called AppleJack with a white mother horse who was having a baby boy. She waited for many days until it was ready then one Valentine's Day it came out and it was blue! He grew into a toddler and it had rainbow hair so the mother called it Rainbow Dash. One sunny day the family went exploring to the river. Rainbow Dash wanted to explore but he was too young to explore by himself. Applejack didn't want to explore so they all went back to their house and got ready to go to the seaside. At the seaside they saw shells, starfish, sand castles and seaweed. After a while it was time to go to bed. The mother tucked them in bed and hoped they...

A Poem For November
No sun – no moon! No morn – no noon – No dawn – no dusk – no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member – No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! November!

An Adventure in Venice
This was a trip to treasure and has been recorded as one of the most interesting and entertaining birthday ‘treats’ ever. So by way of introduction, we two intrepid aviators set off in our long-winged bird of paradise, a Grob 109B to be precise – and for those aficionados not familiar with this elegant mode of flying apparatus, this is a motor glider built lovingly in Germany some 30 years ago, with an impressive glide angle of 1:28, an average cruising speed of 100 knots and a range of 8 hours – which means we can travel a fair distance. To arrive in the beautiful historically wealthy city of Venice, with its plethora of sighing bridges over waters rippled by singing, gesturing gondol...

Jemima and the Pirates
Jemima was a young girl who could always be found in the garden. She loved nothing more than digging holes in the earth and planting seeds which would grow into delicious fruits and vegetables. But Jemima had a secret which she’d never told anyone in the whole world. At the bottom of her garden was an old rickety potting shed. Every once in a while, when her parents weren’t looking, she would creep down to the end of the garden and open the creaky old door. Inside was a giant potato sack which she climbed into and all of a sudden, she disappeared. Just like that! Jemima landed with a thump on something hard and grainy. She could smell the sea and the ground beneath her was s...

Twiggles the Birthday flight!
Well she had decided. She had already enjoyed the wonders of the countryside where she had lived, but only from the ground, despite her wonder of flying creatures, and so she would ask Fancy (the wonderful bird from Perpetua) who had promised to take her on an amazing flight and so it was to be a new adventure, not only to experience a flight on Fancy, but also go to a special land that Twiggles had never visited – Perpetua. This was the land where the magical bird Fancy came from and that must be very special. Twiggles left her message a week after her birthday as instructed to see if the dove returned with an answer. She was not too sure that any response would return it all seemed t...

Hornet Moth - a story of an old aeroplane for young children
I am a small biplane aircraft and this is my story. I think I can already hear you saying, “Just a minute, aeroplanes can’t talk or write”. That is quite true but over the years we old wooden aeroplanes, like old ships and houses seem to absorb into their structure some part of the atmosphere in which they have existed. Every now and then, if we are lucky, we encounter a human who is sympathetic to the atmosphere around us and can attempt to tell our story as we might do if we could. I am now in a museum and a year or so ago it was visited by an old man who flew me back in those days when I still smelt of aircraft paint and hot oil and petrol. He recognised me at once and I remembered hi...

Twiggles Birthday
It was Twiggles birthday and she purred with anticipation when she heard the familiar squeak of the front gate as the postman arrived to deliver the mail. There was a charming card from her neighbour Darcy which he had made for her. It had lovely differently coloured paw prints which he had made into the shape of flowers. He must have dipped his paw into an assortment of coloured inks to do it and she knew how much he hated wet paws, so it was very sweet of him. His twin sister Lizzie had also sent a card upon which was a picture of a fabulous bird of many colours soaring through a clear blue sky, Lizzie knew how much Twiggles wished that she could fly and that she would watch enviously a...

Lizzie & Darcy
Lizzie and Darcy are ginger twin cats, currently nine and a half years old. Lizzie washes herself all day long, and is spotless. Darcy is a boy and not quite so fussy about his appearance. SOMETIMES, Lizzie decides to give Darcy a wash and starts licking his face. He puts up with it for a few moments, then gets cross and gives Lizzie a whack with his paw. It then ends in a fight and I have to intervene to stop it. But they do love one another really and Darcy will protect Lizzie if any other cat attacks her. Darcy is actually in love with a pretty, fluffy cat who lives next door, but the fluffy cat takes no notice of him, and then Lizzie feels sorry for Darcy and gives him a l...

Pin Cushion
In a big house was a little pink bedroom and in that bedroom there was a pink bed, under the pink bed was a pink box where some toys and a small pin lived. The toys were alive and could all talk to one another. When it was very quiet and no children or grown-ups were near they would come out to play. They did not get played with anymore as they were old and used and the children had out grown them. One morning the dollies and teddies decided to climb up on one another to reach the bed. “Can I climb on too please?” Asked the pin. “Oh no!” said one of the dollies “you can’t come you aren’t a proper toy, you are sharp and may hurt us.” The little pin was very sad and made her own w...

Once upon a time there was a secret house, it was in an unusual place, it was deep in a magical mountain. In this house lived a lonely fairy she had no friends because she lived in such a far away place, so nobody knew she was there. Her house was moved there by a witch, who was jealous of the fairy, who was good and kind and friendly, and everybody liked her, so here she was, stuck in the mountain. Her name was Lily. Gone missing
My name is James. When I was six, I lived in a large, rambling, old, falling down house in Derbyshire Our house was home to spiders, hedgehogs, bats and mice. Lots of mice! Mum kept a large broom with which to shoo them away out of the house. I remember the day that Sam went missing, Dad sat by the telephone his head in his hands, Mum was crying, She had been really nice that day. At lunch I was allowed hot chocolate pudding AND ice cream. The day dragged slowly along. “Time for bed James” I did not make my usual protestations. Snuggled in bed, Mum bent down to kiss me good-night when we heard a scritching, scratching sound. Mum sighed and went downstairs to fetch the broom. The sou...

Secret in the cellar
Last lesson, Friday afternoon – numeracy. Time crawled so slowly, I thought it had stopped. I liked numbers. They made sense to me. They didn’t slip and slide off in all directions like words did when I was writing. They moved obediently into neat rows and columns so Mrs Taylor could give each answer a bright green tick. I’d finished the sheet, even the extra questions. I wanted the bell to ring. I checked the clock again. It still said 3.15. Fifteen minutes to go. I yawned. Our classroom was hot and stuffy. A trapped bluebottle buzzed angrily against the window pane beside me. The bell of an ice cream van tinkled in the distance. ‘Have you finished, Anna?’ Mrs Taylor’s voice ...

A Halloween Surprise
One fine day on Halloween a rather strange person came out of Mum and Dads’ room. They didn’t know what it was or who it was. They were intrigued, so they followed them. Once the person was out of sight they began investigating the room. They found nothing out of the ordinary besides a small piece of paper on the floor. It was a photograph of their Dad and Mum but Dad’s body was ripped out of the photo. They found the other piece and in the photo everyone was wearing Halloween costumes. They found a secret door in the house, hidden for years behind a bookshelf. They stopped and heard maniacal laughing. They didn’t think of opening the door because the laughing sounded so scary. The ...
