The Midnight Folks by John Masefield

A young boy lives in an old country house filled with portraits of his ancestors- one night his great grandfather steps out of his portrait and tells him about a stolen treasure- an evil character called Abner is also searching for it too! The boy has some help from the Midnight Folk who join him on his dangerous quest pirates, witches and talking animals!
